Upcoming URBREATH Meeting: Three Days of Collaboration and Innovation in Madrid

On October 2-4, 2024, Madrid will host an exciting event for the URBREATH project. Over the course of three days, the consortium members will gather to align priorities, explore urban rewilding, and build a shared vision for the regeneration of Villaverde, the project’s pilot district. This meeting will serve as a critical moment for planning and collaboration, bringing together various partners to advance the goal of creating healthier, more sustainable cities through nature-based solutions.

Day 1: Focusing on European Priorities and Madrid’s Rewilding Success

The first day will be dedicated to the broader European aspects of the project, as organizations from across the consortium come together to identify key priorities and motivations. This collective reflection will shape the direction of URBREATH, ensuring that the work ahead addresses both local and continental needs.

In the afternoon, participants will take a walk to visit the Madrid Rio, a key rewilding intervention in the heart of the city. This project, which transformed a once heavily industrialized area into a thriving urban green space, serves as an inspiring example of how rewilding can rejuvenate urban environments, benefiting both nature and the people who live there.

Day 2: Focus on Villaverde and Building a Shared Vision

The second day will shift the focus to Villaverde, URBREATH’s pilot area in Madrid. General directorates that were interviewed earlier this year will present their upcoming projects for the district, providing insight into the region’s specific needs and opportunities.

Throughout the day, consortium members will collaborate to create a shared vision for Villaverde, shaping concrete plans that will drive urban regeneration. In the afternoon, the Madrid municipal team will work closely with the local Madrid cluster to further develop these ideas and strategies.

Day 3: Reflecting, Planning, and Defining Next Steps

The final day will be dedicated to reflecting on the insights gained over the previous two days. Consortium members will engage in discussions about emerging needs, next steps, and the challenges ahead. This will be a crucial moment for fine-tuning plans for living labs in Madrid and other cities involved in the project.

The meeting will conclude with an in-person bi-weekly consortium meeting, where members will discuss next steps in the project’s timeline and set goals for the coming months.

Stay tuned for updates as URBREATH moves into its next phase of action!
