During the second week of September, the Kajaani team organised a work shop aiming to discuss changes already observed in the local environment and explore how to prepare for the impacts of climate change.

Observed changes in urban nature

Participants mentioned the spread of invasive species such as lupine and Himalayan balsam, decreasing snow and ice, and stormwater floods across the city. Other observations included urban heat spots, fallen trees, and declining water quality in small water bodies.

Concerns and future outlook

Discussions highlighted worries about changing winters, the spread of invasive species and pests, and their combined effects on ecosystems and people’s wellbeing.

Ideas for adaptation

Participants suggested many ways forward: more trees and greenery in the city centre, creating urban meadows, improving stormwater management, and highlighting local nature sites for both residents and visitors. They also emphasized the role of individuals in enhancing biodiversity, removing invasive species, and joining local volunteer actions. The event showed how deeply people value their nearby nature and how strongly they notice changes. This creates a solid foundation for continuing work on climate adaptation and strengthening people’s connection to urban nature.
